VOLTERRA, VITO

VOLTERRA, VITO
VOLTERRA, VITO (1860–1940), Italian academic. Born in Ancona, he studied in Florence and graduated in mathematical, physical, and natural sciences from the University of Pisa. When 23 years old he taught rational mechanics at the University of Pisa, where he became dean of the Faculty of Sciences. He moved to the University of Turin in 1893. Volterra became a member of the Academy of the Lincei, of which later he was also president. He was dean of the faculty of sciences at the University of Rome in 1907. Volterra was always anti-Fascist. A subscriber to the "Croce Manifesto" drawn up by the anti-Fascist intellectuals, he was among the very few Italian professors to refuse to swear allegiance to the Fascist regime, thus losing his chair. He died in Rome. The department of mathematics at the University of Rome was dedicated in his name. -BIBLIOGRAPHY: G. Fabre, L'Elenco: Censura Fascista, Editoria e Autori Ebrei (1998).
